Simple Four-Channel Network Video Server
Eric Gagnon

Eric recently built a video surveillance system to monitor his property when he isn’t home. He saved a lot of money by incorporating a four-channel network video server rather than expensive IP cameras. The video server, which Internet-enables four conventional NTSC cameras, provides a standard Ethernet network interface. p. 16

Wi-Fi Sunlogger

Read it now!

by Ingo Cyliax
Ingo’s Wi-Fi Sunlogger is a solar-powered data collector that records sunlight exposure. This RCM3400-based device is the perfect tool to have on hand when scouting out sites for solar panel installation. p. 24

Keywords: Wi-Fi, RCM3400, solar power, data logging, batteries, power

Math Coprocessor for Robotics Applications
Daniel Ramirez
Need more processing horsepower for your robot? This design provides additional functionality to microcontrollers that don’t support floating-point math and to those that are too bogged down with other functions. p. 30

Keywords: Math coprocessor, robotics, PIC18F8720, SPI, RS-232, I2C, IEEE 754

Build a VGA Monitor Controller
Enoch Hwang
Enoch built a VGA monitor controller with just two 10-bit binary up counters, four SR flip-flops, and 11 AND gates. The result is an impressive solution for displays. p. 38

Keywords: VGA, controller, video, pixels, control signals, sync, timing, FPGA, UP2

Interface Ethernet and Embedded Systems
Eddie Insam
Fast Ethernet and small microcontrollers do not mix, or so they say. In this article, Eddie shows you how to add full-speed, 100-Mbps Ethernet to an embedded system. Read on to learn about the supporting hardware that will help you get the job done. p. 44

TCI/IP Stack Solution
A Detailed Look at the CMX-MicroNet
Fred Eady
If you need more than a minimal TCP/IP stack for your next application, consider using the CMX-MicroNet, which is a stack designed for microcontrollers that have small amounts of data and program memory. This month, Fred describes the CMX-MicroNet’s behavior. p. 54

Keywords: TCP/IP, stack, CMX-MicroNet, PIC18F8621, RTL8019,

Network Security for Small Systems
Jan Axelson
Nervous that someone might tamper with your embedded system? It’s a common concern, but not too many designers have the know-how to secure a small system. In this article, Jan walks you through the process of protecting a system’s code and data. p. 62

Keywords: Network, security, firewall, TCP, UDP, ICMP, access control, authentication, encryption

FROM THE BENCH
USB DMX
Jeff Bachiochi
Several months ago, Jeff interfaced a DMX receiver to a water fountain system. He used a commercial serial DMX converter for that project. This month, he describes how he updated the device with a C8051F320-based USB interface. p. 70

Keywords: DMX, USB, USBXpress, C8051F320

SILICON UPDATE
Easy to be Soft
Tom Cantrell
Although FPGA-based processors won’t ever completely replace dedicated processor chips, the FPGA soft-core option is becoming increasingly attractive to designers. In this column, Tom examines the soft core concept by focusing on Altera’s new chips and the Nios II core. p. 78

Keywords: FPGA, soft core, NIOS II, Stratix, Cyclone
