NETWORK
DEVICE SERVER
The
EDS4100 (Evolution Device Server) makes it possible
for IT staff to connect nontraditional IT equipment
to corporate networks. The EDS4100 incorporates the
new Evolution OS, which provides the highest levels
of security available, standards-based protocols, and
a powerful development platform that allows for unlimited
control of attached equipment and customization opportunities.

The
EDS4100 allows IT professionals to connect non-computer
devices with the same protocols used to connect traditional
networking equipment, such as servers, routers, and
switches. It includes an extensive suite of enterprise-grade,
open standards-based security such as SSL 3.0 and SSH2
encryption protocols. This ensures that the newly connected
devices don’t become a source of vulnerability to the
existing network. The new device server also incorporates
a Cisco-like command line interface along with a Windows-based
web manager interface.
Without
requiring any special software, the EDS4100 can put
up to four RS-232 and 254 RS-485 serial devices on the
network in a matter of minutes. Serial data from the
device is encapsulated into packets and transported
over Ethernet using a method called serial tunneling.
The EDS4100 can also be set up locally through its serial
port or remotely over a network using Telnet, a web
browser, or SNMP.
The
EDS4100 costs $475.
