VARIABLE GAIN AMPLIFIER BOOSTS BANDWIDTH

The AD8337 is the industry’s highest bandwidth, lowest power-per-channel, DC-coupled VGA for industrial and instrumentation applications. Fifty percent faster and one-third smaller than competing solutions, it also outperforms other offerings by delivering excellent DC and AC electrical performance. Excellent DC characteristics and high speed make the device particularly well suited for a wide range of high-channel-count industrial and instrumentation applications.

The AD8337 provides designers with a low-noise (2.2 nV/rtHz), single-ended, linear-in-dB VGA element at frequencies up to 250 MHz for improved signal control. In addition, the device offers the lowest power per channel, requiring 25% less power than competitive VGAs.

The device offers 24 dB of gain range and excellent bandwidth uniformity across the entire gain range. The gain control interface provides precise linear-in-dB scaling of 20 dB/V. It can be centered by an output common mode adjust pin. The AD8337 is the fastest DC-coupled VGA available with a high slew rate of 475 V/ms in a 2-V step.

Its power consumption is 78 mW at ±2.5 V supplies, which is important in high-channel-count systems. Dual supply operation enables gain control of negative-going pulses, such as those generated by photodiodes or photo-multiplier tubes. An integrated preamplifier at its input, which can be configured with external resistors for any gain greater than two, allows both inverting and non-inverting topologies.

The AD8337 costs $2.49 per unit in 1,000-piece quantities.
