TINY WIRELESS TRANSCEIVERS

The new AC4490-1 × 1 is a mini, all-inclusive 900-MHz FHSS transceiver. The 1² -square module becomes the key component for creating local RF networks where tight space, low power, and limited resources are the OEM’s biggest concerns.

All components, including firmware, are integrated into its sleek multichip module design. Development is straightforward: modules and antennas are simply mounted into place and then powered. No special host software is required; 1 × 1s appear directly to the system as cables.

The modules contain AeroComm’s RF-232 embedded protocol, which allows for plug-and-play installation. RF-232 guarantees successful communication while making the process invisible to the OEM. Over-the-air issues are managed in the firmware to synchronize, hop, gain acknowledgements, send retries, detect errors, address messages, secure transmissions, and other features unique to RF that newcomers may overlook.

The AC4490-1 × 1’s standard TTL serial interface provides bidirectional communication in point-to-point, point-to-multipoint, or multi-to-multi networks. A number of on-the-fly control commands accommodate various wireless applications. Using field-proven proprietary FHSS technology, 1 × 1s provide interference rejection, enable co-located system operation, increase output power, and maintain data integrity.

The device offers serial data rates up to 115.2 Kbps and 1- to 10-mW variable output power. Local/remote I/Os include two digital input lines, two digital output lines, one A/D input line, and one D/A output line. The device operates in the –40° to 80°C industrial temperature range. The AC4490-1 ×1 costs less than $20 each in volume.
