The new Lumex STN color LCDs provide high-performance graphic display capabilities comparable to TSFT LCDs but with a 60% cost savings. These modules are ideal for medical devices, industrial control panels, household products, and hand-held devices such as PDAs, cell phones, measuring instruments, meters, and electronic games. The modules are described in the new design guide.

The six new modules include a 1.5² (diagonal) version with a resolution of 101 × 80, a 2.8² 320 × 240 version, a 3.9² 320 × 240 version, a 5.7² 320 × 240 version, a wide-profile 6.5² 640 × 240 version, and a 7.5² 640 × 480 version that’s capable of true VGA output.

Contrast ratios are as high as 40:1 with brightness levels as high as 150 cd/m². The units are equipped with a long-lasting backlight. The 1.5² unit uses white LEDs; all of the others use a CCFL. The STN color LCD modules are true RGB devices and include all the necessary driver and decoder circuitry with a standard 8-bit parallel interface. Depending on the model, either a 2.8- or 3.3-VDC logic supply voltage is used.

All of the units feature a wide viewing angle—60° (x-axis) and 35° (y-axis)—and are offered with a standard operating temperature range of 0° to 50°C. Modules with an extended temperature range of –20° to 70°C are also available.

The standard 2.8² 320 × 240 display costs approximately $45 in quantities of 1000.
