LOW-POWER RS-485 TRANSCEIVER

The HVD3082E is a new low-power RS-485 transceiver that cuts power consumption to less than 0.3 mA in Active mode. The new transceiver features true fail-safe receiver inputs and ESD protection; it is ideal for demanding applications in noisy environments such as energy meter networks, industrial automation, and telecom racks.

The half-duplex transceiver is designed for RS-485 data bus networks. Powered by a 5-V supply, it is fully compliant with the TIA/EIA-485A standard. With controlled output transition times, the device is suitable for signaling rates up to 200 kbps over long twisted-pair cables, and it features a true fail-safe receiver design that detects and corrects bus open, idle, and short conditions.

When in the Inactive Shutdown mode, the supply current drops to a 1-nA typical, making these devices ideal for power-sensitive applications. In Active mode, the supply current is less than 0.3 mA. The device also features ESD protection that exceeds 16 kV. The SN75HVD3082E (0 to 70°C) and SN65HVD3082E (–40° to 85°C) are available in an eight-pin SOIC package and cost $0.51 and $0.56 in 1000-piece quantities, respectively.
