Test Your EQ

Answer 4—With the half-wave rectifier, terminal Y of the transformer is grounded, and terminal X swings between 14 and –14 V. With a bridge rectifier, both terminals swing between ground and 14 V. This limits the charge on C2 to just 14 V, which is transferred to C3. +VB is now only double the value of +VA instead of triple.
