Test Your EQ:

Each month, Test Your EQ presents some basic engineering problems for you to test your Engineering Quotient. What's your EQ?

Problem 1— How does an insulated gate bipolar transistor (IGBT) work? Draw the equivalent circuit.

Answer

Problem 2— What is the basic topology of a switch mode buck regulator?

Answer

Problem 3—
What is the basic topology of a switch mode boost regulator?

Answer

Problem 4—What is the following circuit?

Answer

Problem 5— What is the magnetizing current of a transformer?

Answer

Problem 6—What is downside of building a transformer with a large primary inductance?

Answer

Problem 7—When driving a transformer with a square wave, such as in switching power converter equipment, what is the shape of the magnetizing current waveform?

Answer

Problem 8—One way to drive the transformer primary in a switchmode power converter is to connect the DC input to the center tap and alternately pull the ends of the winding to ground with power transistors, as shown below. This approach has the advantage of simplicity, but there some pitfalls to watch out for. For example, what is the voltage rating required on the transistors? Why?
