Test Your EQ:

Answer 6—Although a larger inductance means that the magnetizing current is reduced proportionally, which would seem to be a good thing in general, there is a downside. With all other things held more or less equal, the only way to increase the inductance of the primary is to wind it with more turns, and in order to maintain the turns ratio, the secondary must have proportionally more turns as well. More turns means the wire size must be either reduced, limiting the current capacity of the transformer, or the overall physical size of the windings must be increased, raising the mass and cost of the transformer.
