FAQ for Circuit Cellar Electronic Edition Last updated 5/25/2007 How do I update my e-mail address? Q. What is the Circuit Cellar electronic edition? A. Circuit Cellar electronic edition is just that, a searchable electronic edition of the same pages of editorial and advertising that are in the print publication. From time to time we may also be including additional editorial content and special information that does not appear in the print version of Circuit Cellar. Q. Do I need any special hardware to receive the electronic edition? A. The file will be a 15–20 MB file that you will download directly from our server to your computer. Although we are using a high-capacity site to deliver the electronic edition, we strongly recommend that you download the partial test sample before placing your subscription order. With a 33.6-kbps connection, downloading an entire issue could take some time. Because of this we will also be offering the issue broken into several smaller, more manageable files. These smaller files can not be uncompressed individually. All of these smaller files must be downloaded and uncompressed as a set to recreate the full magazine. Please make sure that you can download an issue in a period of time that you feel is acceptable before ordering a subscription. Q. What about cookies? A. Please note that our site does uses cookies. We do not use cookies for gathering information about you however. In our case the cookies are used as a security feature to verify who you are once you log in and try to download a file. You will not be able to download the issue files if you do not have cookies enabled. Q. Do I need any special software to view each issue? A. Each issue will be available as one large file and as several compressed files that you download. Subscribers with a high-speed Internet connection can download the one large file. This file is the issue in Adobe Acrobat 7.0 format (.pdf). To view the issue you will need Acrobat Reader program, which is available for free at Adobe. Subscribers with slower Internet connections should download the several smaller files. These files when combined and uncompressed recreate the full issue. The files are compressed using the RAR format will need to be uncompressed using UnRAR. UnRAR is available for several operating systems free of charge. Download UnRAR for other platforms. For Linux i386 platforms please go to rpmfind.net and search for unrar. Please see How do I use UnRAR for Windows for additional information. The actual magazine issue will be in PDF format, so the only software you need to view the issue is the Acrobat Reader program, which is available for free at Adobe. Please note that download accelerators will not work with our application. Q. When does my subscription start? A. Because the subscription process is completely automated, there is no processing time so your subscription will begin on the day you enter your payment information. For example, if you fill out the subscription forms on January 28, your password is immediately activated and the January issue will be the first issue of your subscription. Q. Do I get unlimited downloads? A. To account for technical difficulties incurred while downloading, or multiple-computer households, your password will be functional for the entire term of your subscription and will allow you to download the issue a reasonable number of times. However, in the course of a month, any password that is used for more downloads than is deemed reasonable or from multiple ISPs, may be inactivated. Q. How do I subscribe to the Circuit Cellar electronic edition? A. A one-year subscription to the electronic edition is $15 and can be ordered at www.circuitcellar.com. Upon subscribing, you will choose a password that will allow you access to the download site each month. Your e-mail address will serve as your username and will provide us a way to contact you with any information regarding the status of your subscription. Q. How will I know when a new issue is available? A. Each month when a new issue is made available we will send an email to the address you have listed in your account information. Because of this it is important that you keep your email address current in our database. Q. How long do I have to download an issue? A. When you log into your account you will be presented with the current issue and the last two issues. This will give you approximately ninety days to download an issue. Q. Are there any dual-subscription (print and electronic) discount packages? A. Yes but you must purchase it through our normal print subscription page rather than through the electronic edition subscription page Q. Can I convert my existing print subscription to the electronic edition? A. Because the print subscription and the electronic edition subscription databases are separate, at this time there is not an efficient method of converting from one to the other. You can subscribe to both the print and electronic editions at the same time, or you can let your print subscription expire and subscribe to the electronic edition at that time. Q. Can I print or post multiple copies of the downloaded issue for educational purposes? A. All of the material is copyrighted and reproducing the electronic edition in whole or in part without written consent from Circuit Cellar Inc. is prohibited. Instructors see college specific FAQ or you may contact the college program administrator (eecollege@circuitcellar.com) to find out more about becoming a member of the Circuit Cellar college program. Q. What happens if I subscribe to the electronic edition and then I am unable to download the full issue? A. If you have any question about the download time or the ability of your system to handle the transaction, please download the partial test sample before you complete the electronic edition subscription form. If you still have questions, e-mail them to eeinfo@circuitcellar.com. Q. How do I use UnRAR for Windows? A. Once you have downloaded UnRAR for Windows to your machine you must either run the file from a command line or double-click on the file to extract it. This will create the file unrar.exe which will be used to reconstruct the issue from the separate issue files. Create a directory on your machine called RAR. For this example we'll say the directory resides on your C: drive so you should see a directory C:\RAR. Copy the unrar.exe file you extracted to this directory. Next, make sure you have downloaded all the issue files from our server and that they are in the C:\RAR directory. The next step is to uncompress
the files into a .pdf file that you can then read with Adobe Acrobat.
To do this you need to bring up a DOS window. Do this by clicking
on the Start button on your screen and select Programs and then MS-DOS
Prompt (if you have Windows 95 or 98) or Command Prompt (if you are
running NT). You should now have a DOS window displayed on your screen.
Type For those of you who prefer programs with a graphical interface, the complete WinRAR package is available for a nominal price at http://www.rarsoft.com. Q. How do I renew my subscription A. During the final month of your subscription a notice will be e-mailed to you letting you know that your subscription is about to expire. When you log in during your final month a window will pop-up letting you know that your subscription is about to expire. At this time you will be given the option of renewing your subscription. To make renewing easier all you will need to enter is your current credit card information. Once you enter this information and submit it your subscription will be extended. Q. Can I use a download manager/accelerator? A. Download managers and accelerators generally do not work with our application because we use cookies and redirection. Q. How do I update my e-mail address? A. If your e-mail address has changed you need to update your account information so that you will receive the monthly e-mail telling you that a new issue is available. To update your e-mail address please log in with your old address. Once you are logged in you will be presented with the download page. Please scoll down to the bottom of this page and you will find your account information. There you can update your information as needed.
