Q. What is the Circuit Cellar electronic edition?

A. Circuit Cellar electronic edition is a searchable electronic edition of the same pages of editorial and advertising that are in the print publication. It is 100% printable and includes direct links from articles and ads.

Q. Do I need any special hardware to receive the electronic edition?

A. No. The file will be a 15-20 MB file that you will download directly from our server to your computer. For the actual downloads Circuit Cellar is contracting for a high-bandwidth dual-redundant OC-3 connection through two different Tier-1 backbone service providers. At 155Mbps, an OC-3 is equivalent to one hundred T1 lines! We trust that this will be enough bandwidth for even peak times.

Q. What about cookies?

A. Please note that our site does uses cookies. We do not use cookies for gathering information about you however. In our case the cookies are used as a security feature to verify who you are once you log in and try to download a file. You will not be able to download the issue files if you do not have cookies enabled.

Q. Do I need any special software to view each issue?

A. Each issue will be available as one large file and as several compressed files that you download. Subscribers with a high-speed Internet connection can download the one large file. This file is the issue in Adobe Acrobat 7.0 format (.pdf). To view the issue you will need Acrobat Reader program, which is available for free at Adobe.

Subscribers with slower Internet connections should download the several smaller files. These smaller files can not be uncompressed individually. All of these smaller files must be downloaded and uncompressed as a set to recreate the full magazine. These files when combined and uncompressed recreate the full issue. The files are compressed using the RAR format will need to be uncompressed using  UnRAR. UnRAR is available for several operating systems free of charge.

Download UnRAR for Windows.

Download UnRAR for other platforms.

For Linux i386 platforms please go to rpmfind.net and search for unrar.

Please see How do I use UnRAR for Windows for additional information.

The actual magazine issue will be in PDF format, so the only software you need to view the issue is the Acrobat Reader version 7.0 program, which is available for free at Adobe.

Q. Are there any special requirements for enrollment in the college program?

A. Yes, you must be a bona fide educational institution and you must register your class (more about that below). After registration we ask that you encourage your students to download the issue each month. In order to keep your class registration and free subscription active, Circuit Cellar must see a committed level of download activity on the account. Class accounts that do not reflect enough activity in relation to the number of registered students risk being deleted. We also request that you do not enroll unless you intend to have at least 10 students, unless permitted by special request, receiving the magazine.

Q. Do I need to re-enroll in the college program to receive the electronic edition?

A. If you participate in the college program, you will need to re-enroll once a year. Your students will have to individually register as part of your class when they download the issue.

Q. How do I get the Circuit Cellar electronic edition for my class?

A. Fill out the application in the New Professor Registration section and follow the instructions. Once approved, you will get a unique, non-sequential code, which you will pass on to your students for gaining access. you will be able to update your information (increase number of copies, change contact info, etc.) at any time via the Circuit Cellar web site.

Q. Do I get unlimited downloads?

A. When you are enrolled in the program, you will have access to the number of downloads defined by the number of students you designate. If you need to increase or decrease that number, you can do that via the Circuit Cellar web site. Once the requested number of downloads has been reached for that month, anyone trying to download the issue will be instructed to notify their professor and that all the downloads allocated for that month have been used.

Q. How will I know when a new issue is available?

A. Each month when a new issue is made available we will send an email to the address you have listed in your account information. Because of this it is important that you keep your email address current in our database.

Q. How long do I have to download an issue?

A. Until the next issue is made available which is approximately one month.

Q. Can I print or post multiple copies of the downloaded issue for educational purposes?

A. All of the material is copyrighted and reproducing the electronic edition in whole or in part without written consent from Circuit Cellar Inc. is prohibited. Instructors may contact the college program administrator (eecollege@circuitcellar.com) to find out more about becoming a member of the Circuit Cellar college program. It is important for you to honor this copyright integrity. Circuit Cellar has to maintain its circulation (now consisting of both downloads and print) if it is to remain a viable publication. Our ability to count student downloads from our server verifies our circulation claims for advertising revenue and maintains our ability to provide it to you free. Posting the PDF on another server not only violates copyright law, it violates the spirit and faith of the agreement between educators who sign up for our college program and Circuit Cellar.

Q. Will there be an expiration date on professor accounts?

A. The first time you login you will be asked to change your password and set the dates your class will run. The maximum time period that can be set is twelve months. While your account will not expire you will need to update your account every twelve months in order to continue receiving the magazine. Please note that once you set the dates for your class you cannot adjust the dates without contacting Circuit Cellar.

Q. Will there be an expiration date on student accounts?

A. All college program accounts expire once a year. We will typically remind you by email that it is time to renew. Students will need to renew each semester for whichever approved professor they happen to have. If a student is taking classes taught by two or more approved professors during a semester, the student will only be able to set up one subscription.

Q. How do I use UnRAR for Windows?

A. Once you have downloaded UnRAR for Windows to your machine you must either run the file from a command line or double-click on the file to extract it. This will create the file unrar.exe which will be used to reconstruct the issue from the separate issue files. Create a directory on your machine called RAR. For this example  we'll say the directory resides on your C: drive so you should see a directory C:\RAR. Copy the unrar.exe file you extracted to this directory. Next, make sure you have downloaded all the issue files from our server and that they are in the C:\RAR directory.

The next step is to uncompress the files into a .pdf file that you can then read with Adobe Acrobat. To do this you need to bring up a DOS window. Do this by clicking on the Start button on your screen and select Programs and then MS-DOS Prompt (if you have Windows 95 or 98) or Command Prompt (if you are running NT). You should now have a DOS window displayed on your screen. Type cd \RAR to move to the RAR directory you created. To create the .pdf file type unrar e xxx.rar where xxx is the issue number for the files you downloaded. The unrar program will run and when its completed you will find xxx.pdf in the directory. You can now view the file by using Adobe Acrobat Reader.

For those of you who prefer programs with a graphical interface, the complete WinRAR package is available for a nominal price at http://www.rarsoft.com.
