OnTV-21
is a small and relatively simple device that allows you
to stay in touch with other people while you're watching
television. The application is based on the PSoC CY8C26443
microcontroller. OnTV-21 includes a wireless link to a
PC that can collect information about incoming e-mails
and chat room requests. OnTV-21 is coupled to a telephone
line so that it can collect caller ID information. The
device displays the information it receives on the TV
using the closed-caption decoder. OnTV-21 gets its name
from the fact that the closed caption information is broadcast
on the twenty-first line of the video frame. OnTV-21 is
inserted in the video link between a TV receiver (tuner)
and a TV that has been set to accept an external video
input. The information collected by OnTV-21 is displayed
seamlessly using the closed caption decoder on modern
televisions.
Despite
the high bit rate (503.5 KHz) of the closed-caption information,
OnTV-21 generates the closed-caption bitstream in the
software. To stay in touch, the TV has to be set to permanently
decode the closed-caption information. OnTV-21 automatically
strips the closed-caption information generated by the
network or cable operator. OnTV-21 serves as the analog
interface to the telephone line and performs caller ID
demodulation. Additionally, OnTV-21 maintains synchronization
with incoming video, filters unwanted closed-caption data,
and generates the closed-caption bitstream.
